Decision
(I don't like plugging up [info]marvel_mansion with bendy-time threads, so this is the first in a series of events that took place after Sal woke up, went to Sophie's funeral, and saw Magneto's broadcast. When these events have been covered, I will link this thread and others like it to a post in the community proper.)

The first thing Sal did after the broadcast was to hurriedly turn off her satellite reciever and then spend what little alone time she had thinking.

Sophie had had a point. All that had happened was her fault; she had taken on more responsibility than she'd really been prepared for -- as a consequence, people were dead or dying. Her method of dealing with all of this was to spend hours (sometimes days) hanging out with Eddie on what she'd begun to call 'Green Island'. It was a tiny island that was just big enough to not be called a sand-bar and to have some foliage upon it, and it was the tiny island where she'd smoked enough BC-grade weed to fry out the brains of lesser people several times over.

But the message on the T.V. was enough to shake her out of her THC-laden stupor and get her thinking about the changes that needed to be made.

And Xavier's School didn't seem to fit within this to-do list of changes anymore. But she owed it to several people to be honest about where she was going and what she was going to try to do.

His head is still bandaged, but he's due to get them off soon, actually. What hair wasn't shaved for the surgeries sticks up in tufts over the bandage. His wings are still hanging in the special slings the doctors had rigged up. Ironically, they may take longer to fully heal--broken bones and cartilage takes a while to stitch up, especially when your healing factor is still on the fritz.

The ventilator pumps away, but they think he might be able to breathe on his own soon. They're not sure if they should hope for much else.

And Icarus sleeps. The way it looks, he may be doing that for a long, long time. Mainly because they're not sure he'll ever wake up.

Kssh shhhh. Kssh shhhh.

Sal spent a long time hovering; trying to find a moment where Jay was alone. She paced back and forth in the outside hall for almost a half hour before poking her head inside.

No change. She'd been keeping tabs on him; his condition was, as the Cuckoo girls had said, all her fault. And so, she'd felt responsible for him, in her own little way.

She grabbed a chair and hauled it over to the bedside, and sat down.

"A fine ol' situation I put ye in, ain't it?"

Kssh shhh. Kssh shhhh.

Just a bit, but he certainly wouldn't blame her, nosirree. She tried. He'd gotten in over his head. He wouldn't have blamed her at all. It was the Purifiers. It was hateful people.

He'd tell her that if he could.

She wiped at her eyes - dry air of hospital rooms made her eyes water. Or at least that's what she kept telling herself.

"But it's alright. 'Cause I think I'm gonna go and make things all okay again. But it's not gonna be here. I'm leavin', and I dunno when - or if! - I'll come back."

A sigh left her. "I just wanted ye t' know that. Case ye wakes up and I don't get to see ye. Mel'll have my number and stuff. And I'll try to visit. Or somethin'."

Kssh shhh. Kssh shhhh.

But why are you leaving, Sal? It shouldn't be over him. That ain't right.

But if you have to, he wants you to do what you need to. Figure it all out. Not everyone's X-track.

Obviously. Some are meant for other things.

...Some were meant for other things.

"And I don't even know if it's the right thing to do. But I thinks I might be able to get from Magneto -" There, she said it, she finally said what was on her mind - "what I couldn't get from this place."

She'd been patient, but her patience had finally ended when people began to die.

"It's a tough call. An' I know there's a hell of a lot of people who aren't going to get it. That's why I come here first. Maybe ye hears me, maybe ye don't, but it's just nice to get it off me chest, you know?"

Kssh shhh. Kssh shhhh.

Er, that's not exactly what he meant. It's not as if Magneto will solve all her problems and give her all the answers, either. That's the problem of both sides--that there's even sides.

Still, he wants her to get her answers.

Or would anyhow.

If he was awake, he'd tell her that he'll miss her. To stay out of trouble. To take care of herself.

"But anyway. I guess I better go steel myself fer sayin' goodbye to Mel and tellin' Summers that he can shove it up his ass. And I hope to God ye can hear me in there. You damn well better get up again. Plenty of people dependin' on ye."

She stood up and replaced the chair.

"Damn, Jay, I'm sorry."

Mel wasn't around quite yet, and so Sal went through the opulent halls of the Xavier Institute, walking quite determinedly toward the office of one Scott Summers.

She didn't even pause to steel herself before rapping on the door quickly.

Luckily, Scott Summers was around.

"Yes, come in."

The door opened a crack, Sal squeezed through it, then shut the door behind her.

"There's somethin' I'd like to ... discuss with you," she said. "I... uh. I'm thinkin' about goin' home."

She could just leave. She's twenty years old -- she had every right to go home. She wasn't asking permission.

Or was she?

Fuck...

Anyone could leave, really. The younger ones were only an issue if they didn't have a home to go back to.

Scott paused in what he was doing and leaned back in his chair.

"Oh?"

He also motioned for Sal to take a seat.

She did sit down.

"Yeah. This whole thing - it doesn't seem like it's workin' out. and with what's gone on lately... I need a break."

Her accent was disappearing. She was stressed out.

"That's reasonable." It's not like he could hold her there if she didn't want to be there.

"Did you manage to clear things up regarding your boat, or is it still being held?"

"No, no, they released it as soon as the government stepped in. Got a notice and everything. Cod's doin' okay up home, and there's lobsters and crab. I figure I can make a living once I get back." She sighed. "And then... who knows where I'll end up."

Do not mention Magneto. Don't say a goddamn word.

She chuckled as she stood up. "If nothing else, it'll be a place to spend the off season. Thank you, sir."

Sal let herself out, and then sighed.

She really needed a cigarette.
